Which version of WoW should you play?

There are three ways to play WoW today. None is better: it depends on what you're looking for.

  • The giant mushroom forests of Harandar, in Midnight© Blizzard Entertainment
    AvailableMax level 90

    Retail

Modern WoW, with the current expansion

The version Blizzard updates with every expansion. Right now that's Midnight. It has every class, automatic group finding, Mythic+ dungeons, raids with several difficulties and plenty of quality-of-life features.

    It's for you if…

    • You want every class and race
    • You like playing in groups without hunting for people by hand
    • Competitive content appeals to you (Mythic+, Mythic raiding, arenas)
  • Heroes of every race in WoW's anniversary artwork© Blizzard Entertainment
    In betaMax level 60

    WoW: Forever

The original world, with new content and level 60 forever

A third branch of WoW announced at BlizzCon 2026. It starts from the world and style of 2004, but adds zones, quests, dungeons, raids and a new race (Skyborne). The level cap is 60 and it won't go up.

    It's for you if…

    • You love classic WoW but want new content
    • You prefer a dangerous world with no flying mounts
    • You want a social, stable experience at level 60
  • A raid group storms the necropolis of Naxxramas© Blizzard Entertainment
    AvailableMax level 60

    Classic

WoW as it was, one expansion at a time

Servers that recreate older versions of the game. Several lines run side by side: Classic Era (the original game, unchanged), the Anniversary realms (which move through the expansions, currently on The Burning Crusade) and progression (currently on Mists of Pandaria Classic).

    It's for you if…

    • You want to relive (or discover) the original WoW
    • You enjoy leveling slowly and meeting other players
    • You like every gear upgrade to feel earned

The big decision

Alliance or Horde?

Your faction decides your races, your capital city and your story. Neither is better: pick the one whose look you like most. In Retail you can run dungeons and raids with players from the other faction; in Classic, you can't.
